THE INTERVIEW

Console Cuties: Heya Kerry. Nice to see a girl with some retro consoles- do they still get played often?

Kerry: I really don’t play them as much as I should, mostly these days- they’re kept under my desk and only really pulled out when there’re some people over having a few drinks and some Mortal Kombat at 3am sounds like a good laugh. I wouldn’t have enough room (or plug holes!)
to have all of them set up at once.

CC: You’d need a thousand scart leads too. So when did you get into gaming and how?

K: First game I ever played was when I was 4, it was ‘Road Rash’ at my Dad’s friends house, everyone laughed at me cause I blew up my bike and ran to the finish line so I kept playing to try and get better and then I got addicted (CC- wait- that’s not how you do it?!). My brother was really into gaming to so we spent a lot of our childhood locked in a room playing 007 and Perfect dark. I didn’t really get into PC games until I was about 15 and a I discovered a LAN arena with some really friendly regulars.

CC: Challenging the gender roles from a young age then. You picked some pretty male dominated games (Good on you!) but what do you think of the recent trend for ‘girls’ games?

K: I think it’s good that they’re making games that cater to everyone. I’ve never played most of them myself (though I must admit I am a secret Sims fan), but it’s nice that they’re trying to encourage girls to get more into gaming.

CC: Exactly! And what do you think about the girls can’t game stereotype- does it cause you trouble in MMOs or are people largely accepting?

K: I find girl gamers are a lot more accepted in MMOs then they used to be- it’s the people that play FPS’s that stereotype more. At my old LAN arena it took me quite a while to build up my rep enough for people to start picking me for teams and to stop calling me “lucky”. I used to go under guys names just to stop the comments, and it wasn’t until one of my friends that called my lucky for years finally turned around and said “ok, you’re good” that I started admitting I was a girl. It get’s you more attention then anything in MMOs lol!

CC: I can bet! So you sound quite into the social side of gaming- you picked multiplayer games for your top three. Why do they appeal to you most? Do you enjoy solo games too?

K: I just find it’s a lot more fun to plan things with your friends and have people to yell at when everything goes bad lol! I do play solo games to but then I usually have xfire or a headset on.

CC: See guys- all those videos about getting your girl into games by making it social are true- our cuties seem to much prefer the multiplayer games! So Kerry, you’re also a WoW fan. What’s your character? Are you a play for hours to level up or a short bursts kinda girl?

K: I have a level 74 human Warrior, a 61 Night elf Death knight and a 45 draenei Mage. I used to play for house, I got a nice bit of played time, but since the 70 – 80 I haven’t been able to get back into levelling like I used to.

CC: So you know your stuff then, across a wide range too, even without being scarily obsessive. If you could be any video game character for a day, which would you be?

K: I think it would have to be Lara Croft- there’s a woman that never let being female stop her doing what she loves :D

CC: Good choice! What about in the future then- are you considering getting a Wii so you can have the full Nintendo set?

K: I didn’t get a Wii before because my brother had one, but since he recently broke his from over playing it I think I might have to get one soon! There’s still so many games on there I haven’t got to try…

CC: Sounds like wishful thinking. Are there any games for the consoles you do have which you’re looking forward to currently?

K: I am really REALLY looking forward to WET! I saw it in a 360 mag a few months ago and I’ve had Ruby as my wallpaper ever since!

CC: Plays the games, reads the literature- I don’t think I even need to ask this but: Why do you want to be a console cutie?

K: I think it’s time for people to realise we are here; that there are girls that play cause we actually love it and not cause “our boyfriends play”; and that it’s time the guys realised we can in fact kick their asses, whether they are willing to admit it or not :P

Kerry- we think you’ve got exactly what it takes to be a Console Cutie.
